Added:  1/19/2001
Article ID#:  KI0017

The following is encountered due to IIS controlling the anonymous user password.

Use the following steps for removing the option that allows IIS to control the anonymous user’s password.

  1. Open Internet Services Manager from the Administrative Tools toolbar on the Windows 2000 desktop.
  2. Expand the default website and right-click the IRM virtual directory.
  3. Select "Properties".
  4. Select the "Directory Security" tab.
  5. Click the "Edit" button next to the heading "Anonymous Access and Authentication Control".
  6. The only authentication method checked should be "Anonymous Access".
  7. Click the "Edit" button to the right of "Anonymous Access". Verify that the anonymous user is set to IUSR_SERVERNAME, the box for "Allow IIS to Control Password" box is NOT checked, and that the anonymous password is blank. A sample screen is displayed below.

  8. Click OK until the desktop displays.
