Creating a UPD File (Creating a program that automatically adds records to menus)

Added 10/09/02 - Article ID#: K000107

Problem:

You wish to create a file that can update the RDP "TABLFILE" with records from another RDP System. This is achomplished with a "UPD" file, which is a file with an extension of UPD, such as RDP1202.UPD.R

Solution:

Many times, a UPD file can be created in order to add menu options in a second directory.  For example, at properties with more than one RDP directory, a custom report may be required in both systems.  Rather than updating the "X?" H0 tables in both directories, a UPD file may be created from the original location and then ran in the second directory.  A UPD file automatically adds sub-records to system tables.  In the following example, report #444 is being added to a UPD file.  The report exists on the Front Desk Reports menu (table XF).
  1. From the System Manager menu, select option "99" - "System Utilities Menu".
  2. Select option "997" - "UPD File Utility".
  3. Select option "4" - "Add/Replace record to UPD file".
  4. Enter the UPD file name.  In this case, name the file 444.UPD.
  5. At the "Table/Sub-Record" prompt, enter the table and sub-record that will be copied to the UPD file.  In this case, the first table and sub-record is "XF444" (no quotes).  By entering "XF444", the system adds sub-record 444 from table XF to the UPD file.
  6. Next, add the table corresponding table H0 sub-record for report 444. (Normally, this will be sub-record 444).
  7. Once all records are added to the new UPD file, <ESCAPE> to the RDP Main Functions menu and login to the second RDP directory.
  8. After logging in to the second RDP directory, go to the System Utilities menu (99) and select option "997" - "UPD File Utility".
  9. Select option "1" - "Update TABLFILE.DAT from UPD file".
  10. The system prompts for a "UPD File Name", enter "444.UPD" (no quotes).
  11. Tables H0 and XF are updated with the new report sub-records.  A new option, 444, appears on the Front Desk Reports menu in the second directory.

Supported Environments as of10/15/08
See Hardware Requirements for an entire list.
Workstations All workstations must use either Windows XP Professional or Windows Vista (Business or Ultimate) 32-bit only (not 64 bit on workstations) with all service packs installed .  RDP no longer supports Windows 95, 98, ME, or 2000 Workstations.  For RDPWin, a minimum of 1 GB of RAM and a dual core processor or faster are required.  See Hardware Requirements for an entire list.
Servers The data server must be Windows 2003 or 2008 32 or 64 bit with all service packs installed and at least 4GB of RAM (16 for customers with 20 or more workstations).  RDP no longer supports Novell Netware Servers.  Feel free to call RDP Support at 970- 845-7108 with any hardware questions.
Pervasive The Pervasive database must be Version 9.52 or higher with all Service Packs installed.  See Pervasive Overview.
Printing Issues RDPWin supports all standard Windows Printing environments.  Our legacy RDP-DOS system may not be able to print if the printer is USB, TCP/IP or wireless.  Additionally, printing remotely with Terminal Services or Citrix may not work with RDP-DOS.
NetMeeting or
Remote Desktop
To provide the highest level of support, RDP requires access to your system with Remote Desktop or Microsoft NetMeeting.  Carbon Copy and other remote tools are not supported.  See Hardware Requirements for more details.
RDPWin RDPWin is our Microsoft .Net Windows-based software.  It accesses the same database at the same time as your existing RDP-DOS and Internet Reservation Module (IRM).  Please review:
For more information see Hardware Requirements.
