Windows XP Service Pack 2 Issues

8/26/2004 - Microsoft has released Windows XP Service Pack 2 (XP-SP2).  After initial testing, RDP software appears to function properly with XP-SP2; however we have not yet tested all features.  A few known issues appear in this document.

Firewall May Need to Be Turned Off

With Windows XP Service Pack 2 Microsoft included Windows Firewall (turned on by default).  Windows Firewall is designed to "help protect your computer by preventing unauthorized users from gaining access to your computer through the Internet or a network".

If you experience network connectivity problems (for example, someone can no longer print to your printer), you may have to turn off Windows Firewall.  When working on network connectivity or security problems, a general troubleshooting rule is to turn off Windows Firewall to see if the problem still occurs.  For example, if another workstation cannot print to your printer, turn off the Windows Firewall on BOTH computers and see if the problem still occurs.  To turn on/off the firewall:

  1. Start - Settings - Control Panel - Security Center.
  2. Click "Windows Firewall".
  3. Select "OFF" (or ON).
  4. Click OK to Save.

Allow Firewall Access to Pervasive and File/Printer Sharing

Windows Firewall may attempt to block the Pervasive Database Client or engine.  When prompted to block the "Database Service Manager", make sure to Unblock it.  To view the firewall Exceptions, proceed as follows:

  1. Start - Settings - Control Panel - Security Center.
  2. Click Exceptions.
  3. As shown below, one of the firewall exceptions is "Database Service Manager" which is the Pervasive Workgroup Engine.
  4. The sample below also shows that file and printer sharing is an exception.

Turn Off All Windows Firewalls on the IRM Bridge Server

The Internet Reservation Module (IRM) runs on a Windows 2000/2003 server (smaller customers a Windows XP Professional workstation).  It is essential to turn off any "software" firewalls on the IRM server such as Windows Firewall.  The only firewall allowed with the IRM is an external, physical firewall.  See IRM Hardware Requirements.

RDP May Run Very Slowly With Windows XPSP2 and Anti-Virus Software

Several customers have reported that after the installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2, the system runs slowly on some workstations.  For example, entering a new reservation might take 10+ seconds to move between fields.  When these customers disable the anti-virus software disabled, RDP performs at a normal speed. RDP suggests contacting the vendor of the anti-virus software to obtain an update that is compatible with Windows XP SP2.

Note:  Some anti-virus programs have an option to "scan network drives".  This option should be disabled on all workstations to improve performance.  The anti-virus software on the server should take care of network scanning; not each workstation.  See KWin0006 - RDP very slow when Anti-Virus software is set to scan network drives.

Do Not Scan Network Drives with Client Anti-Virus Software
